Aspire Sports and Cultural Trust is a finalist in the innovation category at the Community Leisure UK Awards 2019. The award recognises leisure trusts who have demonstrated strong product or service innovation.
The Community Leisure UK Awards, formerly known as the Sporta Awards, is an industry-leading ceremony recognising the extraordinary impact of public leisure and cultural services throughout England, Scotland and Wales.
The nomination particularly recognises Lunar City as the first of its kind attraction in the south west, helping increase physical activity levels across Gloucestershire – the most inactive county in England.
Lunar City was launched in 2018 to encourage families of all ages, backgrounds and physical and mental abilities to have fun together in a physically active environment. The initiative also ensured GL1, as a facility, enhanced fitness in the overall community. Lunar City, located at GL1 in Gloucester, has had almost 19,000 unique users since its inception and has seen a 600% rise in activity levels.
Jacquie Douglas, Chief Executive at Aspire Sports and Cultural Trust, said:
“We would like to thank the judging panel at Community Leisure UK for shortlisting Aspire Sports and Cultural Trust. The UK Leisure Trust operators are creative and ground-breaking in their approach and can demonstrate strong product and service innovation and we are thrilled that our charity has been considered a leader in this respect.
Lunar City is a fun, family initiative that is brand new to the Gloucestershire area. This exciting addition to our range of services has given us the opportunity to use an existing underutilised space to get more people active and we are so pleased to see that its had a positive effect on the local community and surrounding areas.”
The award ceremony will take place on May 22nd in Salford. Winners across eight categories will be picked from a judging panel that includes the Royal Society for Public Health and CIMSPA. Winners will then be announced on the night.
